San Jaun Aruba and Curacao
We are booked on a repositioning cruise in late October out of Boston
that goes to San Jaun, Aruba and Curacao. I am looking for info on the best things to do while in these ports. In San Juan we are only there from 6PM to 2AM and currently are not planning on getting off unless we can find something we want to do. Does anyone know if the shops will be open at that time and how far away from where we dock they are??? In Aruba, we were thinking about renting a car for the day and exploring the island on our own. Any ideas on where the best place to reserve a car ahead of time might be?? Any must sees?? In Curacao, we have no ideas and are looking for suggestions. Thank you in advance. Deb San Juan- If you jdock at Pier 1 or Pier 3 on a weekend there is an open air market at the end of the pier. As an alternative, the cruise lines usually have a shore excursion to the El San Juan or other large hotel for dinner and a show or for gambling. It's better than staying on the ship. Aruba- You can rent a car on the pier, no reservations needed. Be sure to get a car and not a jeep. There is virtually no place on Aruba that a regular little car can not go, and besides the sun is murder there because you are only eleven degrees north of the equator. The shade and air conditioning of a sedan come in mighty handy. The rental agency has maps, but it is almost impossible to get lost. If you do, just remember that all the trees on the island lean toward the port. (They are called divi divi trees and the trade winds have made them grow in that direction.) Curacao- Be sure to explore the downtown secton, then cross the small bridge to Scharloo. It used to be a red light district, but is now home to many beautiful houses with unusual architecture and vivid coloring. |

Get snorkel gear from the ship and stop at the WWII German ship wreck that is not to far from the cruise ship dock. It is clockwise around the island. I think you could easily swim from shore to the wreck. It is one of the neatest experiences I have ever had. 'Course I am only 60 and have led a sheltered life. I would not wander around San Juan real late at night but a bus ride to town is cheap and you could find some shops open in the evening. 9 PM is supper time in that part of the world and people are out and about.
