Default Question about Alaska waters

We have booked the Serendade from Vancouver to Vancouver. We have sailed 4
times in the past, and have always used the patch. My wife gets seasick fairly
easy, so we have not sailed without the patch. SHe does however have some side
effects to it.

Someone told me that the Alaska cruise is very smooth and the sway of the ship
is not as evident. Can someone that has sailed this cruise confirm that?

Thanks in advance. I have very much enjoyed reading the postings, with a few
exceptions. Some of the posts I don't understand, but they appear to be a long
standing feud of some kind. Nonetheless, I have learned much from you folks. I
thought I was an expert cruiser with 4 sailings, until I read many of your
posts!

Default Question about Alaska waters

Where is your cabin and at what time of year are you sailing?

Alaskan waters were pretty choppy for us between Seward, Sitka and
back into the Passage when we sailed two years ago on the Summit, but
that was at the end of August, when seas tend to be a bit rough in
general. Still, it wasn't too bad..

On any ship of any size, being mid-ships and low in the vessel always
helps when it comes to mal de mer!

You may not have need of the patch.

Cheers,

PegNDerek

We booked a balconey, midship, and are sailing May 29th, 2005. We booked it
early and got a great rate of $2700.

Default Question about Alaska waters

Hi Mike,
The waters in the inside passage are generally smooth. That being said this
is Alaska we are talking about. The weather changes frequently. I also noticed
on your Iten that you will be going to the Hubbard Glacier. Getting to Hubbard
Glacier you have to be out on the open sea and the winds do pick up a bit there
at times. The other area that can be a little rough is the Dixon entrance. This
is the area between Canada and Alaska. You have no Islands there to block the
winds from the open ocean.
I hope this information helps. Like I said its Alaska and the weather can
be hot one day and rainy or cold the next. But it is my favorite cruise
destination.

George...Cruising the week of June 13th to Alaska.

Default Question about Alaska waters

I can only speak from my experience.

I too get seasick very easily, riding in the back of a car gets me going as
will reading while moving. I used to have problems with airsick but have
gotten better about that with age.

I took a 12 day cruise from San Francisco to Alaska we did Hubbard Glacier
and well as Glacier Bay National Park. we went on the Crystal Harmony which
is a smallish ship by today's standard.

I had no problem with motion sickness the whole cruise which was the end of
June, a great time to go! 4th of July in Sitka was great fun!

I have been on 7 cruises and it was only my second cruise without getting
sick! The first was a 5 day cruise from Athens to Istanbul!

Sounds like you got the right date (calmer seas in general, although
June might have been better), right cabin location (midships) and
certainly a great rate! Given all of these considerations, I would
leave your patch and that for your wife at home. You can always
purchase bonine or dramamine on board (or get them from the ship's
doctor) if you need them--although they do have a "sleepy" side
affect. Personally, I do not reach for the meds in any kind of rough
weather--a good deck chair in an open and airy location with a ginger
ale to sip and perhaps a bowl of rice or a load of crackers and I feel
110% better!! VBG

Enjoy your cruise and let us hear all about it when you return!

Peg veteran of many voyages, including a particularly rough one in a
typhoon back in 1967--the deck chairs were tied to the railing on the
ASIA at that time and my Dad insisted on strapping Mom and myself into
deck chairs so we could be outside in the fresh air--it really
worked!!
