Arison doesn't expect to order new ships this year
"It may be awhile before industry giant Carnival Corp. orders a new ship
for one of its many subsidiaries ... That's the word from Carnival Corp. Chairman and CEO Micky Arison, who says the world's largest cruise company may go the rest of the year without placing another new order other than the one it already has in the works for subsidiary Princess Cruises. "I wouldn't be surprised if we don't do another deal this year," Arison said. usatoday.com Arison explained that a 10% lower cost to build is not enough: "We are not going to build ships we don't need". During the call management pointed out Seabourne and Costa offer relative bargains. In the case of Costa capacity increased 13%, but the European market essentially remained flat. Lower priced Caribbean cruises, representing 57% of the North American market, are doing relatively well, unlike Alaska cruises. |
