I'm walking down a street full of whores

I used to visit this newsgroup frequently, at least once a week
and it was a pleasure. Since I've traveled a bit in the US, I could
occasionally give people some useful information they were
seeking.
But for various reasons I've not been back for almost a year.
Now about half are not inquiries for information but people who
are using groups to sell something.
After an hour at the keyboard, I feel like I've just walked thru
the redlight district in the slums.

Newsgroups were great in the early days, but for many years they've
been overrun with spam, incivility, etc. Most of the serious
discussion has moved to other places -- blogs, moderated forums, etc.
