Vienna: meal cost?

Friend is going to Vienna for a week in early summer (Haydn Festival).
What should he budget for meals? Not necessarily gourmet, but at
least something to edible to keep body and soul together. Thanks.

Like any other major city, you can eat quite well at almost any price. Wonderful
food like a big bowl of Gulaschsuppe or some tasty wurst are available quite
cheaply anywhere outside the inner ring.

(Tip: if you order a beautiful platter of bratwurst, and it comes with what
looks like a mound of finely textured couscous, don't dive right in and gobble a
big fork full.)

Have not returned there for 4 years - but overall experience
is same as in all other major city: everything from fancy
expensive (tourist) places with average quality/quantity to
some small, cheap places offering huge portions of good
food.

My best food experiences in Vienna were recommendations
from hotel staff. Was sent once to a small, hidden restaurant
for "Vienner Schnitzel" - a 10 Euro menu turned out to soup,
salad and 3 of the largest schnitzel I ever saw with rice and
french fries, and got withouth asking alu-foil for carrying the
remaining schnitzel back to the hotel ......

You should try the Wiener Schnitzel of course. I have been successful
in having a proper meal with a drink for around EUR10 this year. You
have to avoid the touristy areas, difficult to do if you are
sightseeing. A large pizza is about EUR10 too, so with drinks that's
about EUR6-7. If you order a 400ml drink that can be shared. The Fast
food places should come to about the same, but you should be really on
a tight budget to go to Vienna and have fast food.

Light meals at 10 euro or even less, more substantial dining at 20 euro
... easily done, even within the ring. Especially fun for lunch:
Trzes'niewski, the open-faced sandwich shop/cafe in Dorotheergasse,
just off the Graben. Stop in for a coffee at the smoky, atmospheric
old Cafe Hawelka across the street, too.
