Default Air Canada terminal changes at YYZ Toronto

Why are they bothering if they are going to shut down a week or so
later? "Frank F. Matthews"

I hardly think that when the new terminal was planned several years
ago that it was expected that the main user would be in bankruptcy,
and facing liquidation :-)

Although people here have criticised Terminal 1, particularly as it
got old, I have always liked it. I spent many hours there waiting for
flights, including one overnight session.
Plane-spotters are unhappy; T1 parking garage was the best place to
watch aircraft. The new terminal and also Terminal 3 have no places
landside with a view of aircraft.

Terminal 1 was built in 1964 and forty years is a good life for an
airport terminal. It was designed with care and has handled far more
than its designed capacity. Originally there was a garden with a statue
in front of it.

Terminal 2 was a disaster from the start, and the closure of the tunnel
to Terminal 1 for security reasons, made the inter-terminal transfer
a pain.

Terminal 3 I like, particularly the pedestrian access from Airport Road,
which avoids the need to drive into the airport complex.

The first time I flew from Toronto was 1962 so I must have used an older
terminal; I confess that I don't remember it.
One terminal I do remember was a temporary Terminal 3 (minimal facilities
in a freight hangar) used for charter flights in 1971.

Not only has that spotting location been eliminated. The parking area that
was at the east end of 5/23 was taken away last year, or was it the year
before.

I hear the new apron control tower on top of T1-new has a great view :-)
Too bad they didn't have the foresight to built an area for plane spotters
about half way up :-(

I haven't scouted around to find out if there are some good locations at
the end of the other runways. (you can only park in the Tim Horton lots
so long :-)

I noticed in the Saturday Star pull out, that there is an area where they
load buses airside to take you to the "infield terminal just north of the
control tower and infield cargo area. The road is a tunnel under the
15L/33R and taxiways.

ps. eliminate the Uppercase letters for the real address.
