Default Sahara followed by Jet Airways has started international flight from India

Sahara followed by Jet Airways has started first international flight
to Colombo (Sri Lanka). With this, Indian private operators start the
first ever international operation. Both the airlines recently got the
permission to operate flights to Nepal and Bangladesh.

Very soon Jet Airways and Sahara and in the long run, newer players
can operate flights to America and Europe. Both the major private
airlines are tight-lipped about their plans but Sahara is expected to
commence operations to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore soon. Jet
is expected to charter the new-generation Boeing 777 and may announce
non-stop operations between Delhi and New York, thus significantly
cutting journey times to the US.

At present, of the 15 million international travelers who use Indian
airports, nearly 70 per cent fly on foreign airlines.

Now that the private sector will provide an alternative, not only will
that balance alter, but the hotel industry is hopeful that there will
also be a doubling in the number of tourists flying to India because
the non-availability of seats has always been the big deterrent.

As for fares, both Jet and Sahara are expected to announce apex
schemes of the kind that prevail in the domestic sector and
under-the-table discounts to travel agents are certain to go up. The
travel trade is already talking about fares to London that are as low
as Rs 18,000 to 20,000 and special fares to New York of Rs 25,000.

And foreign carriers could not get more slots as the government does not
want to increase their 70 % share.
