Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway
Hello Everyone:
I'm planning a trip from Philadelphia, via Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway, to Ashville, NC. Any suggestions to stopovers, inexpensive places to say, don't need fancy, just sleep and then go...hike, walking, crafts...and then I'll drive back! Thanks, Lyn |

That's what I did when I did this same trip over the course of 7 days back in 1977. With a car, you can virtually bring along all the accoutrements of home. With an AC power adapter for the cigarette lighter, you can even run a TV or laptop computer. But if you insist on having 4-walls & a roof, how about some the lodges that are a part of the Shenandoah & Parkway. They tend to be rustic, but functional. The following sites have descriptions: http://www.nationalparkreservations....ay_lodging.htm http://www.americanparks.net/shenandoah_lodging.htm [Roger] |

Peaks of Otter Lodge is lovely for a night. Not sure of the price-
probably not too cheap but what I loved is that every room looks out over the lake. Beautiful and serene- Susan Roger B. wrote: "lyn" wrote... Glendale Springs is a small village on the Parkway in northwest NC. Turn off the Parkway on NC 16, make the three-or-so-mile drive into Glendale Springs, and there's a small motel adjacent to a popular restaurant, The Gathering Place. http://www.ncinformation.com/jeffers...mmodations.htm Glendale Springs is also home to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, a rustic sanctuary with a prized fresco on the wall behind the altar. (Sunday morning services are held at Holy Trinity every other month -- the congregation alternates between Holy Trinity at Glendale Springs and St. Mary's in West Jefferson. St. Mary's also houses some prized fresco paintings.) http://glendalesprings.com/ There's also a small B&B in Glendale Springs, near the church: http://glendalespringsinn.com/ Jefferson NC, which is about a 15-minute drive from Glendale Springs, has a Best Western motel, an independently operated motel (the Highlander Inn), and the Jefferson Landing, a golf course community that has both townhomes and a hotel. http://vacations.jeffersonlandingclu...mmodations.htm West Jefferson is also about a 15-minute drive from Glendale Springs. Nation's Inn, a traditional-style independently operated motel, is near the intersection of NC 194 and US 221, on the road that goes to St. Mary's Episcopal Church. (The entrance to the Nation's Inn parking lot is opposite the entrance to the Ingle's supermarket parking lot.) |

Thanks everyone, for the advice. For those of you who did the drive, how
long did you take to enjoy it fully? Were there side roads, or small towns you spent time in to get a sense of the people and atmosphere? In most places you can get off the parkway to a larger town that will have
some reasonable chain hotels and restaurants. Need to plan it out but in Virginia anyway there are a couple of nice small towns that are interesting in themselves.
