another coup expected next week

Police Step Up Security In Bangkok By D. Arul Rajoo BANGKOK, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- The police have stepped up security in the capital to avert clashes between the pro and anti-government groups Saturday, as fears of a second coup in two years is gaining momentum. Former deputy police chief General Salang Bunnag has vowed to force out the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) from the Government House which they had been occupying since the Aug 26 seizure. On Wednesday, he led a mass prayer at the nearby Royal Plaza and is planning to cut off food and water supplies to hundreds of PAD supporters in the premises where the office of the prime minister is located. But PAD leader Chamlong Srimuang said they would remain in the compound and were ready to fight any attempt to drive them out. In early September, a pro-government supporter was killed during clashes with PAD and on Oct 7, two people and over 500 were injured after police used tear gas to disperse PAD supporters from blocking the Parliament. Salang said he would mobilise former policemen to carry out the threat and has also received support from another pro-government group, the Democratic Allaince Against Dictatorship (DAAD). The DAAD had a gathering of about 10,000 people on the outskirt of Bangkok last week, and is planning another mammoth meeting on Nov 1 at a stadium here where former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is expected to address the crowd from his exile in Britain. Thaksin was ousted by the military on Sept 19, 2006 while away in New York attending the United Nations General Assembly. His brother-in-law, Somchai Wongsawat, became the prime minister on Sept 17, taking over from Samak Sundaravej who was disqualified by the Constitution Court for appearing in a television cooking show. With Somchai on his first overseas trip where he is attending the Asian-Europe Summit in Beijing, speculation is rife that the military would stage another coup, less than two weeks after Gen Anupong Paojinda went on air to demand his resignation over the Oct 7 incident. "It is only a matter of time. Right now, people fear there may be another coup," Chulalongkorn University political and security analyst Panitan Wattanayagorn told the Bangkok Post. -- BERNAMA |

Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach Time for tea. |
