Default Layover at PHL

So, I'm going to have about six hours of layover time at Philadephia
Airport on a Sunday afternoon in a few weeks. For those of you who've
used this airport, is it feasible to take the train into town - say to
Suburban Station - to walk around, maybe get a late lunch, and come back
with enough time to get through security for the next flight?

Also, is there a place to store luggage during this time? I doubt there
are lockers any more, but perhaps there's some sort of "left luggage"
or "luggage deposit" service desk?

yes. The train goes at least to 30th street stn and you can connect
from there. Not sure where else it stops. Frequency is every 1/2 hr
(departs PHL :15 and :45 IIRC) and costs $5 ech way.

no clue. Why not look at the PHL website?

Good for a between-flight session at the Standard Tap or Monk's or
somewhere else with good food and drink in Center City. Works for me.

D'oh. Looked, and it doesn't mention one. Maybe I can ask/pay the
folks at the lost-and-found desk to store our stuff. Or I could take
an even bigger risk and check our luggage (ugh). I normally travel
pretty light, and carry what I need on-board.

PHL is the airport nearest to where I live. I fly out of PHL about three
or four times a year. You should be able to take the R1 train line to
Center City for a nice meal or just to walk around and be back in time
for your flight, but do not forget to allow time to get through the
security area when you return to the airport. The rail schedule
is at http://www.septa.org/ and look for the R1 schedule.

I don't know if there are locker facilities in each terminal, but there
is definitely a locker area in Terminal C or D. You can check the
airport's web site to confirm.

On the other hand, if all you want is lunch, why not eat at the airport?
The food court by Terminal C is excellent. There are some local
specialties served there at reasonable prices. The airport also has a
few full service restaurants. PHL has morphed into a pretty decent
shopping mall over the past few years. A six hour layover is a great
excuse to sit and relax with a good book and eat a decent meal at one of
the full service restaurants at the airport and then board your
connecting flight. This will save you the cost of the train fare.

In fact, I had to take an 8:00am flight last December to SLC out of PHL.
A blizzard delayed my flight by five hours. It was one of the most
productive five hours I had on a Saturday morning. I had my laptop with
me so I plugged it in and I did a lot of reading for the meeting I was
headed to in Provo and I ate a good breakfast at the food court. You
might consider doing something similar.

Back 40 years ago, recently married, I had to spend a week in Philly when
I'd have rather been elsewhere, but I'm happy to report that W. C. Fields
may have been exaggerating when he claimed to have won a contest in which
the First Prize was a weekend in Philly, while second prize was two
weekends in Philly.
