Hi,
I will be vacationing in Prescott, Arizona for 3 weeks this June/
July and want to take a side trip to the Grand Canyon area for 2-3
days. Any suggestions of where to stay in the Grand Canyon area that
is not incredibly expensive would be greatly appreciated. Also please
mention things to do in the Grand Canyon area. I've heard that the
heliocopter ride is not to be missed.
Thanks

I read that the average stay is 4 hours which seemed strange to me but
we spent one afternoon and the next morning there and pretty much went
everywhere we could. However, this was at the beginning of April, at
Easter, so we didn't have to take the shuttle buses and we didn't hike
into the canyon.
We then drove to Monument Valley which I would loved to have seen. It
started snowing as we were leaving the Grand Canyon and snowed all the
way to Keyenta. (Sp?) It was snowing and foggy when we got there and
still was the next morning.

I remeber Sedona when it wasn't a wold-class resort area and I
thik it's been badly spoiled. But it's worth a stop for lunch.

As a town it's been spoiled, but the scenery and hiking are still great.

Yes, that does sound like what a friend of mine calls a "California
vacation" -- walk around a little, take some pictures, and get back
in the car. In this case, though, echoing some things others have
said, it is *so* big that you both can and can't experience it in a
brief visit or with one mode of transportation.

I fly a couple of times a month between the Bay Area and Albuquerque
on Southwest. Their nonstops go almost by the same route you would
drive, except for cutting a corner across Vegas. Weather and daylight
permitting, the view of the Grand Canyon* (and several other
picturesque bits of geology) is spectacular.

That's one extreme in how to appreciate this feature (and perhaps the
only way to get the whole picture), 15 minutes from up in the jetways
with a cup of coffee in your hand. You can also choose up-close-and-
personal ways at various levels of time and exertion that involve
hiking, rafting, or riding a mule, as well as lower-altitude scenic
flights. They all add up to a whole that only a lucky few, myself not
yet among them, ever have the privilege of putting together.

Anyway, as others have mentioned, there are many things to see and do
in the general area: Sedona, Prescott, Petrified Forest, Meteor
Crater, the Sunset Crater volcanic area, the Painted Desert (try to
catch it at sundown), the monument to the Code Talkers up at Kayenta
(in Burger King -- the cultural center of a small town isn't
necessarily where you'd first think to look), Glen Canyon Dam and
environs, Canyon de Chelley, and, oh, whatever serendipity blunders
you into. The only thing you can do wrong is rush.

Enjoy your trip (and perhaps think of it as a reconnaissance mission
for future ones),

* Sometimes -- usually eastbound -- they opt for a more northerly
route over the Utah canyonlands and Monument Valley, no slouch for
scenery either.

While I agree that Canyon de Chelly is interesting, that is kind of a
broad idea of general idea. It's more than 250 miles from the Grand
Canyon.

I do wish that we had had more time to visit there but we were locked
into an itinerary.

Good luck with that. In order to stay anywhere remotely near the Grand
Canyon, you need to book a room several months in advance.

For various values of "remotely." Rooms are almost always
available in Flagstaff or Williams on, at most, a couple days
notice.

Mention of Williams reminds me that http://www.thetrain.com/ is a way of
getting to the South Rim.

My own preference on the three times I've been to the Canyon has been to
stay at one of the places inside the park on the South Rim (I'll get to
the North one day). It's expensive and can be a bit soulless but doing
that I've seen both sunrise and sunset over the canyon and I've been able
to hike down to Phantom Ranch. You also get a slightly calmer view than
during the day when the hordes arrive.

I certainly recommend the North Rim. It has much more character and is
less commercialised but the down side is you really do need to book
accomodation up to a year in advance.

Keith
