your link does not lead to a stored version of your itinerary. Please
describe it in words.

No more travellers anywhere than during normal working season, both on
local and long term lines.

Since it is not clear to me where are you travelling, the question on
booking may not make sense. You DO NOT book at all on local (regional)
trains. You book on IC and high speed trains (Frecciabianca to
Frecciarossa) but usually can do it buying ticket at the counter at the
last moment. Crowding possible perhaps only on Friday or Sunday late
afternoon (depending on direction).

Info on trains can be obtained via :

the Trenitalia/FS site
http://www.fsitaliane.it/homepage.html (may
suggest you expensive trains in preference to local ones if you do not
know the way)

this fast interface to the German railway (I like this interface and
works for most of Europe, gives the most sensible choice of trains but
does not allow to know fares outside of Germany ... and recently does
not cover some regions in Italy like Lombardy due to a change of
operator
http://www.myway.de/e.lauterbach/aus...fplanx-en.html

http://www.viaggiatreno.it/viaggiatreno/
is a rather good realtime interface developed by Trenitalia, it allows
to follow trains in real time on a map, and has also an imbedded
timetable (but does not allow ticket buying or fare info)
