Default Bali & Bangkok

I live in India. I have booked tickets & hotles for visiting Bali &
Bangkok through an Indian travel chain. I am going to be just spending a few
days at each of these places, so I am not going to have a lot of
time to go there & decide what to do.

My travel agent has the following groups tours he says he can
book for me.

Bali
Half-day Ubud Tour (Ubud Village / Art Market-USD-25
Half-day Uluwatu Tour (Uluwatu Temple) -USD-33
Half-day Tanah Lot Tour (Tanah Lot Temple) -USD-42
Full-day Kintamani Tour without lunch -USD-45
Full-day Bedugul Tour without lunch -USD-45
Bali Bird Park Visit (entrance only - no transfers) -USD-25
Sunset Dinner Cruise USD-53
Day cruise to Nusa Lembongan Island-USD-85

BANGKOK-
Full day Safari World with Marine Park -USD-40
Full day Dreamworld with Snow Town -USD-44
Half-day Grand Palace-USD-35
Half-day Crocodile Farm -USD-33
Full day Floating Market with Rose Garden & Lunch -USD-42
Full day Floating Market with Rose Garden, Crocodile Farm & Lunch-USD-42
Chaophraya Dinner Cruise with transfers -USD-55
Kanchaburi Tour with lunch -USD-45
Full day Ayuthaya Bus & Boat Tour with lunch -USD-75
Calypso Cabaret with Soft Drink with Return Transfers-USD-35

He wants me to chose a few at each place, so that he can book it
for me.

I am travelling in the 3rd week of October. I was wondering if I had
to make a choice right away or could I go & decide the previous evening
as to which tour I want to go to & ask the hotel guys to book it for me.
Would I be able to get into these tours just a day in advance. Would it
be more/less expensive?
Or would it be better to book in advance?

Also, any suggestions on what are the best of these tours to do?

Our main interests are
- visiting temples,
- cultural programs
- dance programs,
- handicrafts etc

Why not just do your own thing? Cheaper and more
interesting.

See if these help with some ideas:

How did you travel inside Bangkok? Did you use buses or cabs? How
expensive are cabs? If buses, are they comfortable & good frequency?

I want to do my own thing, but I am spending very few days at each place.
Don't want to miss a day because I couldn't find transport.

If you want tours in Bangkok, you can easily book them from your
hotel. Probably cheaper too.

That's what I thought, but a friend said that sometimes these tours get
booked in advance & you may not get seats in the last minute.

Also, other than going on these tours, what are my options, are there
public buses in Bali & Bangkok available for seeing these places - are
there pickup points near enough the touristy places? What about cabs,
how expensive are they? Are they metered - or do you have to bargain?
Also, can you flag a cab on the street, or do you have to book it on the
phone?

Cabs were very cheap by my standards, but I have forgotten
the actual prices. From memory the long trip into town from
my outer-suburbs hotel was about 300 baht (400INR), fares
around the central city area were usually less than 100,
sometimes a lot less. Even cheaper in auto-rickshaws, which
are similar in quality and price to Jaipur or Delhi.

The prices were more expensive than Delhi, but not a lot.

Traffic is horrendous (although, maybe not compared to where
you live - it is much better than Delhi or Agra, see
http://loraltravel.blogspot.com/2008...ian-roads.html
:-); always allow a lot of time to get anywhere in the
traffic.

I want to do my own thing, but I am spending very few days at each place.

Why not choose one of your set half-day tours for each
morning and spend the afternoons doing your own thing, or
vice-versa? That may allow your the best of both worlds.

There are hundreds of local tour providers there; if you
change your mind it will be simple to arrange tours on the
spot from an agent in the Khao San Road or similar.

One mistake I made was to stay in a hotel too far out of
town. Pick something reasonably central to the attractions
you are most interested in, even if it costs a little more.
You will save a lot of traffic time.

I didn't use the buses; I did use the ferries to see the
river, and I used the metro once but I've forgotten the
details apart from it being clean and inexpensive.

A PS to my other reply.

The answer is "both". Metered cabs have signs to that
effect, but even those can be a problem at peak hour if you
are going to the outer suburbs. They may haggle for a higher
fare in that case or not go in your direction. However, I
always got one eventually. Another reason to have a ventral
hotel.

Also, can you flag a cab on the street, or do you have to book it on the
phone?

I always flagged them on the street, apart from the ones
that sat at the hotel. The same for auto-rickshaws.

Thank you, Alan. Do I need to be in Khao San Road at any particular time
of the day for a tour or do they have have tours going through the day.

I'm with Peter and Alan on this. Bangkok has huge tourism
infrastructure. Also, with the major attractions like the palace
complex, do it yourself. It's easy. Or instead of a river tour, take
the regular river taxi. The views are the same.

You can book last minute tours easily from hotels or going to Khao San
Rd anytime .... maybe not with five minutes notice but, say, in the
morning for an afternoon tour. It's far easier to get around than
Indian cities of equivalent size.

Prices have probably hiked in recent years. However, fares are regulated in
Bangkok. In 2005 the flag down fare was a mere 35 bahts. A five kilometre
ride cost something like 50-70 bahts. One shouldn't consider travelling with
those pathetic three wheelers. They are dangerous, they are typically a lot
more expensive than a regular taxi, drivers are typically very unskilled and
they also tend to pressure tourists going "shopping". All in all, very
annoying beasts.

These tariffs are ridiculously cheap compared to any city in Western Europe.
