Default How do you get to and from the Airport

I am very interested in feedback re transport to and from Airports.

Parking prices are abhorrant, taxi services abysmal and shuttle buses leave
on set schedules.

I am setting up a web portal to accept bookings for professional drivers in
registered Chauffeured Vehicles to provide airport transfers at set prices.

Limousine Companies do service airports now, but this portal will make the
booking of these vehicles a lot easier and at prices confirmed at the time
of booking.

Yes prices will be higher than that of a taxi, but we will offer a
professional and timely service with drivers meeting passengers when they
exit the arrivals doors.

Feedback or thoughts of those who travel regularly would be very
appreciated.

How many airports are there in Australia? Then add airfields and aerodromes
- thousands.

I'm assuming you're talking about the majors - SYD, MEL, BNE, PER, ADL, etc.

IME, the shuttles at these places are frequent enough to make it quite
convenient, although the fixed ROUTE can be a bit more of a bother after
flying for a day and a half and schlepping everything down to - and
sometimes including - the kitchen sink (well, a water purifier, but the
literary license begged for it).

I live in an area where the international airport (YHZ) is quite distant
from the city, and services a massive area. Many professionals use limos
for just this reason (pick-up, drop-off). The trick seems to be (a) flat
rates and corporate rates for frequent travelers and/or those within a fixed
radius (say, within a half-hour of the airport) and (b) to be priced
slightly above taxis (maybe 15%). I'm as tight as the bark on a tree, but
given the choice between

(a) climbing into a filthmobile of dubious vintage, encountering some frowsy
bloke who has slept, bathed (if at all), eaten and shagged in his clunker,
and "misunderstands" the directions due to a lack of command of English, and

(b) having my bags placed - not tossed - into the boot, having the door
opened by a liveried, shaven, and courteous driver who smiles, climes into
his seat and then minds his business (or expounds, as you wish), and paying
maybe ten bucks more....

no choice.

In Brisbane there's already a Skytrain, which operates from both Domestic
and International terminals. It's making quite a large enough loss as it is.
Doubt there's more room for another loss leader in the field right now!!!

Besides taxis are reasonable in price - hence the aforementioned losses!!!

I work for one such company in Adelaide (Smart Car)
A sample listing for Adelaide is
Cheap: Adelaide Impressions - www.adelaideimpressions.com
Middle: Smart Car - http://www.smartcaraustralia.com.au/
Expensive: Hughes - http://www.hugheslimousines.com.au/

There are a number of others that are much smaller or offer slightly
different services such as EPS and Des's - but the ones above are the major
companies.

As someone who drove cabs to and from Tullamarine for 17 years, it's
worth researching the specific city you visit if there's time. For
example, in Melbourne and Sydney there are services within the cab
system which include top quality limo-equivalent cars and drivers at cab
prices. I used to drive one. Our customers rang us direct on the mobile;
we met them at the baggage carousel etc. They are usually cheaper than
the limos.

Touting is an offence in Melbourne. If you want one of the "special"
cabs, you will see the drivers with names on boards waiting for their
customers. Ask one of them to arrange a car for you.

On my recent rtw trip I needed cars at about twenty different airports
in seven countries over five months. We found that it always paid to
check at the limo counters and compare prices; very rarely did we take
the shuttle or a cab.

On the trip back, in Las Vegas, New York, London and Singapore we used
the hotel porter to arrange a limo; in every case it was cheaper than a
cab. In London, we weren't staying at a hotel so I just tipped the
porter at the nearest International one in Portman Place. The limo was
ten quid cheaper (including tip) than the quote from the London cabs.

Cheers, Alan
