Couple more questions... HAL's new tipping policy.
Why? Given a chance, the system works.

Believe me...your activities are tracked, both by room and table number. I believe the pool arrangement works, whether the staff agrees with it or not. Remember, these folks want to renew their labor contract, and any glitch, such as withholding a direct tip, could mean their dismissal. Even if they are on their 'last' labor period, they want a good recommendation for their future. Our HAL waiter was immediately on the 'hot seat' for bringing our dessert menu before the normally scheduled moment. That brings up an interesting scenario....who gets your table tip if you choose to eat on the Lido all the time? My best guess would be your assigned table personnel. On the other hand, if you were a real chiseler you could remove your auto-tip, eat on the Lido and save all the table tips for yourself. Suppose you are on Freestyle dining and don't have assigned table personnel? (I know this isn't HAL but it's a similar question). Also - are you allowed to partition the $10/day tip to exclude one of your service persons. Like can you exclude the person who put the waiter on the hot seat and increase the waiter's tip correspondingly? Do you even know what percentage goes where? Which begs the question...why cruise at all? tongue-in-cheek You can stay home, save the price of the cruise, airfare to the port, eat at McDonalds and buy National Geographic travelogues of the places to which you would otherwise cruise. Then you could bequeath your savings to your eligible, deserving heirs. grandma Rosalie |

Couple more questions... HAL's new tipping policy.
Hi Grandma.... I think you're on the right track towards what many
find so irritating about HAL's new tipping policy. ...If we tip, we like to tip to those whom we feel deserve it. I know I tend to be overly generous -- just about all the time; however, I have eaten at a few restaurants where the gratuity simply remained in my pocket. ...Not because I was trying to save a few cents, but because I felt the service stunk. So here's my gripe --- You get nailed the 10 buck a day "service" charge. ....All well and good. However...You can't just leave your extra money at home, as Dick mentioned. 'Cause if you leave without "personally" tipping the usuals (waiter, assistant waiter, room steward etc), you'll be deemed a cheapskate who was not "personally" happy with the services they rendered. ....In other words...You'd be looked on no different than those who (under HAL's previous policy) avoided the last dining room meal, just to save a few bucks. ....The new tipping policy, is nothing more than a bonus for those who normally don't ever receive tips. Would these "faceless/nameless" service personnel be grateful for the additional money received? ...Of course, but not in the sense of it being a "Thank-you" from the passengers for doing such a great job. Listen... The first thing these crew members will doing on embarkation day is checking to see how full the ship is. HALs new tipping policy won't change anything, really. Sure, everyone will get an extra dollar or two per day on their paycheck, but the ones who truly bend over backwards, or go out of their way to "personally" look after the guests will actually see a reduction in pay. ...Not because they are less deserving now, but because the passengers will have considered them already duly compensated. ....The whole system sucks, as far as I'm concerned. HAL should have left well enough alone; chalked on an extra 100 bucks to everyone's cruise fair; and raised the pay for those working behind the scenes. ...Jon |
