I travelled from Addis to Asmara (via Sana'a) early this year.
There are no direct flights between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
There is also no open land border crossing.

The cheapest flights are on Yemen Airways, with a weekly
same-day connection via Sana'a. Sana's is interesting,
IMHO, and worth a stopover for at least a few days.

Citizens of some countries, including the USA, can get tourist
visas to Ethiopia on arrival. But you cannot usually get visas
to Eritrea on arrival, or anywhere else outside the country
of your citizenship or residence; you must get them in your
home country, before you leave. Yemen Airways will not allow
you on their flight to Asmara unless you have either a visa
to Eritrea or written confirmation that a visa has been
pre-authorized for you for issuance on arrival.

Overland travel is *possible* via Djibouti, but arduous.

Different visa rules apply for people who arrive by sea.
Some yachts (mainly en route up or down the Red Sea en route
to and from the Suez Canal) call at Massawa. It is conceivable
that you might be able to find a ride on a yacht from Djibouti
to Massawa, although I wouldn't count on it.

Ethiopia is wonderful. There isn't much to do in Eritrea, and
you have to get permission for any travel outside Asmara, but
it is interesting and very different from anywhere else I
have been in Africa. It's hard to really understand
contemporary Ethiopia without also visiting Eritrea.

Bon voyage!

Edward

Thanks a lot for your interesting post. Could you tell me how much the
flight costs from Ethiopia to Eritra via Sana'a (Yemen Airways) or
Djibouti, ? And .. how much visa costs?
Thanks again

How much the flights cost depends on all the usual factors: is it one-way
or round-trip or part of a longer multi-stop ticket? (In our case, it was
part of a through ticket from Dar es Salaam to Hong Kong.) And where, when,
and from whom did you buy the ticket? See if yuo can include it with the
rest of your tickets, and try to find an egency that deals in discounted
("consolidator") tickets on Yemenia, such as agencies that serve the
Ethiopian and/or Eritrean (or Yemeni) expatriate communities.

Visa fees vary by nationality --check with the Eritrean embassy for your
country, since you will have to deal with them anyway.
