Going to N'awlins!
Hi there,
My boyfriend and I are heading to New Orleans for a week for vacation in September. We'd love recommendations for great things to see and do while we're there, and also anything to avoid or be wary of. We'll definitely go on tours of cemetaries and do a ghost and a swamp tour. We're staying near the French Quarter, so we'll see plenty of the most famous areas. We want to eat at Commander's, because it's supposed to be one of the best restaurants in the world. We'll check out the Voodoo Museum. We're not real big on jazz, but I'd like to hear some zydeco (swamp) music. We're also hoping to see/hear some pirate history and maybe some drag queens. Thanks very much in advance for any recs! Best wishes, GiGi |

Dear GiGi,
You will definetely enjoy "n'awlins". I would recommend that you take the St. Charles Streetcar all the way through the Garden district to the zoo, park and just walk around it is a beautiful drive and very classic. SInce you are staying in the French quarter you must eat breakfast at the Cafe Du Monde. I would also recommend a dinner cruise (if you go near the waterfront between the hilton and aquarium you can find some good deals) if you are stayinga few nights. Commander's is a must if you are willing to fork over the big bucks also try the Red Fish Grill it is off Bourbon Street. Enjoy! "GG" wrote in message om... It may be late for a Commander's Palace reservation. Check quickly.

"Muriel's" is a fairly new restaurant that is worth checking out in
the French Quarter. The chef has been named best (new?) chef in New Orleans, and the food is excellent. Prices are reasonable (by New Orleans) standards, too. I've eaten there twice, most recently last weekend, and have been very pleased. See www.muriels.com for a menu. There are many different swamp tours from which to choose. I usually recommend Dr. Wagner's Honey Island Swamp Tours. They do a pretty good job, and the owner is a PhD in wildlife biology (or something like that). Very friendly folks to deal with in person and on the phone. One of the visitor brochures has a $5/person coupon for them. A tour of one or two of the plantations along the Mississippi can also be interesting. The National Park Service has free walking tours of the French Quarter every day at 9:30 a.m. You need to get there around 9:00, though, because they have a limit to the group size.
