Thanks, Eric (Paris - France) By serious hiking I presume you mean what we call tramping in New Zealand.. There are many tramps, mainly in Sth. Island with huts/bunks for overnight. Charges are $15 to say $25 per nigh depending on hut standard. Most are three to five days, and the terrain can be rugged. If that sound like the sort of thing you are after check out the Milford track, Kepler track, Routeburn, Stewart Island, Holly ford, Heaphy track, St James walkway, The Humpridge. They're all good to do, and you'll find info. on most with a quick check on google. Backpack required, plus normal gear, and I would suggest a small gas cooker. Some have controlled numbers and you would need to book in advance. Good preparation is necessary, as even the 3 day tramps can be rugged. Some, Milford, Hollyford Routeburn etc offer guided options, but not at all necessary for most people, and relatively expensive.A good book which I'm sure you could order online from most N.Z. bookshops is 101 great tramps in New Zealand, aothors Mark Pickering and Rodney Smith published by Reed and I'm sure any N.Z. bookshop you find online (hitcoulls, Paper plus, Real Groovy, University bookshop-Dunedin) would send you a copy. Not epensive, but very useful. Nearly all such walks are controlled by The Department of Conservation, (DOC) and you'll find info on their site. Post any questions here if we're on the right track. |

Thanks, Eric (Paris - France) How serious is your serious? For the popular tracks, get yourself a copy of Lonely Planet's "Tramping in New Zealand". http://shop.lonelyplanet.com/product...productID=2117 If you want to avoid the usual popular tracks and find trails that may be a little more difficult and self-reliant, get yourself a copy of "101 Great Tramps in New Zealand". http://www.nzbooks.com/nzbooks/produ...ring0790006375 Some alpine tracks could have avalanche conditions in November. Here's a couple of suggestions 1. Egmont round-the-mountain trail 3-4 days. 2. Ruapehu around-the-mountain 4-5 days -- Cheers, Ralph The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. |

I might want to avoid alpine tracks as I'll be walking alone... |

West circuit and the southern loop combined. If based in Te Anau in Sth. Island you could do Milford, Hollyford, Routeburn and Kepler in succession. Or from Routeburn the Caples and Greenstone tracks and the Reese and Dart tracks would keep you on foot for a while. More hiking than tramping is the Central Otago Rail Trail - maybe 250 kilometres odd with all varieties of accomodation available. If you simply want to go hiking there's heaps of roads (non motorway). Just grab a N.Z road map and look at secondary roads. |
