If your PC is close enough, you could just run category 5 computer cable
between your PC and any such box. The speed and reliability will be better
than wifi, and you don't have to worry about security as much.

I think I would prefer a cabled solution.

Apple's iTunes combined w/ the wireless connection to your home Hi-Fi
via Apple's Airport Express is very slick... the Standard.

On the road, you can jury-rig a MP3 player with a 'cassette adaptor',
if the machine has 'auto-reverse' the quality will be worse.

I just read about a slick little device that Logitech is launching next
month (in US and Europe, reportedly):

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/pr...ONTENTID=11828

It doesn't use wi-fi; it just has a transmitter that you plug into a USB
port on your PC, and a separate piece that you plug into your stereo with
standard RCA jacks, and a cool LCD remote control so you don't have to
read an LCD across the room.

I'll have to look into wifi, have I got this right? I store all
the music on a hard disk. Fit a wifi system to PC which allows
the PC to connect via radio to the Squeezebox, the Sqeezebox
acceses the hard disk via wifi and the server software and the
squeezebox is hard wired to the amp as an input device, you then
choose your tunes from the squeezbox remote.

Absolutely correct

what happens if the PC comes under a heavy load of other work,
does the music stop?

You wouldn't generally expect this to happen. With an apple G4
powerbook, the earlier releases of Google Earth did actually interfere
with itunes, which I found quite bizarre, and I can't think of another
application which did. This didn't happen with further versions of
Google Earth though.

That small issue aside, I find playing music from the computer
remarkably stable.

Usually the wired versions of these devices are less expensive, too - the
wired squeezebox is £33 less at Amazon.

You'll have a little extra/different setup for a direct wired setup
between this system and your PC, but its pretty basic. Feel free to e-mail
if you're interested in details.

excellent, I may email when I get stuck!

The squeezebox I bought has a wired port too

then i'll get the one with both for flexibility. The Ion USB deck
just arrived, looks slightly better than I feared but seems to be
able to take cassette input, a bonus as I have some casettes I
want to convert to MP3 or CD.

but I do have a separate disk for the mp3 files to ease the IO
load.

I will do the same.

not even replying to Mixi? I suspect writing a CD while playing
music might not work well, but it doesnt matter.

Actually, not a problem on my macbook, or the previous powerbook. It
takes around 5 minutes to write a normal length CD, and you can do
whatever you want, play music, run other applications- or at least, I've
not had a problem yet. (I suppose things like RAM will be a factor here
though.) Quite different from the late 90s when I had a crappy usb cd
writer, and practically had to close all the windows and not make a
noise while it decided whether or not to write the CD at 2x! I don't
imagine it would be a problem with a newer PC either.

The Ion USB deck
just arrived,

indulge with a couple more questions that I'm sure you lot can
answer quicker than I can research!

I have a 4x USB 2 card and hub in my PC, i will run out of
connections with coming addition of:-
turntable
broadband
squuezebox
another USB HD
to
existing scanner, memory card reader and USB hard disk.

(I assume USB 2 is backward compatible to the 1.1 of the
turntable)

Should I attach additional external mini hub or hub to carry the
extra devices? Not sure I see the difference. I assume USB sends
data in some sort of "packet" way as it seems you can do this
sort of thing.

I'm glad to see I can get "repeater" extension leads to bridge
the gap between Hi Fi and PC. One I see allows for connection of
two devices, so I assume that would be good to use with the
Squeezebox and the deck (er, in Europe) ?

The wind up gramaphone did have advantages you know :-)
