I've got an app on my ipod (Word Lens) which looks at text through the camera and in real time displays the transalation. I have the Spanish to English plugin, which I don't really need, but it's been useful for trying it out. For large text (e.g. signs) it works very well, including on a web page. Translating a book page is possible but not very practical- it's better for small amounts of text- works with menus quite well for example. It's in its infancy but that kind of technology could be useful as it improves. The translation tends to do as well as what's currently available on google... Of course, the available apps with translation dictionaries are useful, and the portability of these small devices makes them convenient. -- (*) of the royal duchy of city south and deansgate www.davidhorne.net (email address on website) "[Do you think the world learned anything from the first world war?] No. They never learn." -Harry Patch (1898-2009) |

Your computer's browser should have a translation facility (I believe mine is Google, but I might be mistaken.) . Mine works fairly well for translating German, but tend to really mess up on proper names which shouldn't be translated. But the computer often does, making for some pretty weird text. But going back to the original text and returning to the translation can easily fix many of these. George |

Just wondering if there's a worthwhile translation device to carry around. If you stay in Paris and spend your time primarily in places where there are lots of tourists (and such places are legion in Paris), you won't need a translator, as most people in regular contact with foreigners speak at least a little bit of English these days. If you stray off the beaten path or into the provides, a translator might be more useful ... although a phrase book could work just as well. For example, if you walk into Louis Vuitton on the Champs-Elysées avenue, everyone there will speak English. But if you walk into a do-it-yourself stores (like the very interesting basement DIY center at the BHV store), you'll be in an area that typically is visited by only locals (how many tourists are looking to build a new kitchen?), and most of the staff probably won't speak English. |

Well, you usually get ripped off if you walk up to a local and don't try to speak at least a few words in the local language. |

That's how I respond in Finland when a foreigner is approaching me and tries to communicate in bad English. I am still learning ndebele. No kidding. |
