Default Travelling in Kafue Nat Park

I am planning to travel as independant traveller to Kafue Nat Park in
late Aug this year. I have travelled previously through SA, Namibia,
Botswana & Zimbabwe.
I understand hiring a suitably rugged 4x4 in Lusaka is not possible.
Can anyone confirm this. If so, I guess the best way is to hire vehicle
in SA or Namibia & drive up.??

Looking for cheap accommodation or camp sites in / around Kafue. I am
planning to stay for about 3 weeks for taking wildlife photos.

I have heard that the wildlife has recovered since the days of
poaching. Can anyone confirm this especially ref predator animals and
elephants.
John

The only thing I can confirm is that Kafue was very dissapointing
compared to Luangwa and the better parks of Kenya and Tanzania. It's a
long time ago since I went there, but neither landscape or wildlife was
worth spending more than a couple of days for.

John,

I was there at that time in 2003. Less wildlife than other parts of
Zambia, but I saw some good sitings and enjoyed the remoteness. I
stayed at Busanga Bush Camp, so cannot help with independent camping.

In the 3 days there, we spent most of our time hanging out with a
pride of about 8 lions. Also spotted: a pair of cheetah, 2 separate
serval sitings, vervets, baboons, hippo, a honey badger, sable, oribi,
Lichtenstein's hartebeest, roan antelope, reedbuck and huge herds of
red lechwe. Some interesting bird sitings we purple heron,
Fulleborn's longclaw, rufous-bellied heron, lesser jacana, numerous
watled crane, open billed stork, and black bellied korhan.

To see more and better views of the anteleope, which Kafue is noted
for, a little later in the year would be better--September-October.
Also in Busanga Bush Camp, the lions took to the trees frequently in
the hotter weather, again September-October. I did not see elephants,
but they apparently are in the forests.

Hi John -

I haven't been to Kafue, but am looking at planning a trip myself and
have already done some research on places to stay.

Some places with camping sites I've found include:
Lufupa (http://tinyurl.com/58thu)
McBrides (http://www.mcbridescamp.com/)
Puku Pan (http://www.pukupan.com/)
Kaingu (http://www.kaingu-lodge.com/)

I think the top 2 sound the nicest. Another website in addition to the
one above with accomodation info is: http://www.zambiatourism.com/

Good luck!
