Emirates Could Threaten Air NZ - Expert

Speculation that Emirates Airlines plans a major international hub in
Auckland comes as no surprise to a financial adviser.

Air New Zealand's chief executive has told the Australian Competition
Tribunal it needs to merge with Qantas to compete with Emirates'
expansion plans.

The tribunal is hearing its appeal against the Australian competition
regulator's decision not to allow the merger.

Simon Botherway from Brook Asset Management says he believes Emirates
would prefer to hub out of Australia but does not have an agreement
with the Australian authorities to allow it to do so.

Mr Botherway says Emirates could pose a real threat to Air New Zealand
if it has similar fares and levels of service.
