The place itself is boring - long interminable streets with motels. I
stayed in Nelson which is much better and has a beach, excellent
restaurants and the WOW museum. The area, however, is one of the most
pleasant in NZ with Abel Tasman and the Nelson Lakes nearby. I suggest
you make Nelson your base and arrange trips/drive to Abel Tasman and
Nelson lakes from there.

Incidentally, I climbed Mount Robert above Lake Rotoroa in the Nelson
lakes and there was no one around; everyone was in Abel Tasman. I
thought the Nelson lakes area around St Arnaud is one of the two best-
kept secrets in NZ.
