Take money.

Look up the group "Enjoy Rome".

and also where go to eat,

Avoid any restaurant within 100 feet of a major tourist sight, or with
a picture menu or five-language menu.

what is important,

I would recommend a walking tour of the ancient sights, especially the
Forum, so that you really appreciate what you are seeing.

If you have any interest in art, the Vatican Museum really deserves
half a day. If you just rush through to the Sistine Chapel you will
miss so much.

The Colosseum and St. Peter's are much less crowded in the afternoon,
since bus tours mostly see them in the morning.

I would also add the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navona as
must-sees. There are lots of beautiful and interesting churches
throughout the city.

what is not...

You will see people in gladiator costumes hanging around the tourist
sights. Do not take a picture of them unless you are prepared to pay
them.

Pickpocketing is unfortunately a problem, so it's a good idea to wear
a money belt. Especially watch your wallet and bags in and around
Termini Station and in the Piazza Navona.

Many cafes charge you a low price at the counter, but charge two times
as much if you sit at a table inside the cafe, and three times as much
if you sit at a table outside. Be aware of this, so you aren't
surprised when the bill for a tiny cup of coffee is 6.30 euros.

Hmmm........ that's a tough one because there really isn't much to do or see
in Rome. And "where to eat", try the waffle house out by the interstate. Try
this site to get you started: http://www.romega.us/

My bad. I thought it was
rec.do.all.my.travel.research.for.me.because.frank ly.I.can't.be.bothered. I
can't tell you what I like or what interests me. BTW, I'm thinking of going
to europe. Can someone please tell me what I should see there? Should I eat
any food while I'm there? What kind? Are there any things I'd like there?
(and you really should try the waffle house out by the interstate, it's
dee-licious)

Italy is a fantastic country to visit.

- Rome is very large and make sure to allow at least 5 days to see the
sites.
- Consider taking a city tour (bus) to get oriented.
- We stayed at a hotel near the Spanish Steps and were able to walk to most
of the sites.
- Get the Dorling Kindersley (DK) travel guide book for Rome. This book has
all the information you will need.
- Leave the Rolex watch at home and get a cheap Timex.
- Use an ATM card to get money. Make sure you have a 4 digit pin.
- A car is totally useless in Rome or any other large city. You might have
to close you eyes when you take a taxi.
- Save some money and time by taking the train from the airport to the main
train station in Rome.
- Get some really comfortable shoes and good (not cotton) socks. There are
interesting things to see around every corner, and you will walk a lot.
- Dress like a local, which means no funny T-Shirt, shorts, Nike shoes, and
worn out jeans ... unless you are under 30.
- Get a small camera that will fit in a zippered pocket. Nothing attracts
the pickpockets more than a fancy camera.
- We visited Pompeii on a one day tour. This was the only tour we took in
Italy and it was well worth the money.
- Consider adding at least Florence to your visit. The Florence train
station is only a few blocks from the middle of the city and many hotels.
- It is very easy and fairly cheap to get around Italy via train. They have
English speaking agents at all the big stations.
- For hotels check out the Traveladviser and Venere websites.
- As indicated elsewhere, be careful of the pickpockets.
- Learn some Italian and get one of the small electronic translators.

Have a great time and let me know if you need any more help.
