No and I explained why - they can't go for their week in the sun/skiing
without one. An American can.

I don't accept that having a Passport JUST for this activity make you a
worldly traveller

What the f*ck america holiday destinations has got to do with it either
I'm at a complete loss.

Because going on holiday (and no other) is the reason that 90% of people
have a passport.

It is damning because it identifies the insular attitude of americans ...

I don't agree that having, or not having, a passport makes a jot of
difference here.

An awful lot of people go abroad for their ho9lidays because they can
experience a different culture.

Not many people go to Venice for the skiing...

Water skiing! ;-)

Whereas many of us go to Milan and Vienna and Paris for the opera and
classical music.

Are you prepared to define 'many' in terms of the overall population
of the USA?

No. (I was referring only to those of us who travel abroad.)

so you are saying that "many of the USAans who travel abroad do it because
they are Opera fans"?

I find that hard to believe.

This is not correct. All European countries, be them EU members or not
are sovereign nation states, which issue their own passports.

Schengen agreement is only an agreement to suspend border controls
between signatory countries, not an indication of a passport-free
zone.

A traveller must *always* possess a passport, or a national identity
card specifying citizenship, when in an European country other than
your home. This must also be available for inspection at any time by
the local authorities, should they choose to inspect you.

Finally, any Schengen member state can at any time and at own
discretion re-establish border controls for any reason they see
valid. Theoretically, you could get stranded in another EU-country,
should you have left home without above-mentioned travel document,
however this kind of scenario is very unlikely.

Not true. UK and Irish Citizens may travel freely without any identification
within the UK and Ireland.

Try traveling from the UK mainland to any part of the island of
Ireland without one and you'll find that you're wrong.

The carriers insist on passports...
