I don't agree that having, or not having, a passport makes a jot of

An awful lot of people go abroad for their ho9lidays because they can
experience a different culture.

Not many people go to Venice for the skiing...

This is not correct. All European countries, be them EU members or not
are sovereign nation states, which issue their own passports.

Schengen agreement is only an agreement to suspend border controls
between signatory countries, not an indication of a passport-free
zone.

A traveller must *always* possess a passport, or a national identity
card specifying citizenship, when in an European country other than
your home. This must also be available for inspection at any time by
the local authorities, should they choose to inspect you.

Finally, any Schengen member state can at any time and at own

within the UK and Ireland.
