Trip to Victoria and Nanaimo

We are planning to spend three nights on Vancouver Island in July (as
part of a two week trip to Seattle, the Olympic peninsula, Victoria,
and Vancouver.) We are not sure whether to spend all three nights in
Victoria, or whether we should spend two nights in Victoria and one
night in Nanaimo. If we spent the third night in Nanaimo, we would be
there during the bathtub race. Is that event worth going to?

We are interested in seeing the gardens in Victoria, scenery, nature,
and native culture. (I thought a trip to Duncan might be intersting.)

This bathrub race sounds like it could be interesting. Am planning a
trip up to Tolfino to stay at the Wick Inn and would be interested in
combing the two. The bathtub website lists several races. Are there
any that are more interesting to attend than others?
