Train Travel Perth to Sydney
Hi All
We wish to travel from Perth in late March 2006 after visiting with friends to Sydney. Instead of flying we are considering going by train. Has anyone done this recently and any advice. Looking at web sites but cannot decide whither to buy the ticket in Australia or alternately but here in the UK. All advice gratefully received. Pat |

How many are in your group? If more than 2, it is cheaper and a greater
experience (if you have the stamina) to hire a car and drive across. BTW, you do know that the train costs lots more than flying? "Patm" wrote in message ... Check out these site for more info. I think you can save if you purchase a
pass if you intend to do other rail trips in Oz. http://www.countrylink.info/travel_p...ail_flexi_pass http://www.gsr.com.au/ -- The Commissioner www.the-commissioner.com "Patm" wrote in message ... I rode The Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin (also a GSR train) in June this
year. Two days and two nights. Acceptable but I'd had enough by the time we got to Darwin. Perth to Sydney - well? It is a lot longer than two days and two nights. O The Ghan I spoke to a couple who just arrived from Sydney via the Indian Pacific. Their comment was that the relatively new tracks from Adelaide to Darwin were much smoother than the ride from Sydney to Adelaide. They got no sleep. Don't let me put you off though. These are still two of the greatest train journeys left in the world. Check it all out on GSR's web site http://www.gsr.com.au/ A word of caution about booking. We made initial inquiries about The Ghan in August 2004 and all the trains were booked out for the season. A month later we got a "cancellation" but fares had to be paid up front. For Gold Kangaroo service that's $3600 odd. The Indian Pacific is a little cheaper. Ross "Patm" wrote in message ... Hi,
I am planning to do this next year also but the other way around. If you are member of the YHA OR HI (Hostling International), providing you book through a YHA travel centre, you can get a discount on the Ghan, Indian Pacific & Overland for a Red Kanga Daynighter Seat, I am told the Red Kanga Day/Nighter seats on the Ghan, IP & Overland aren't too bad for comfort wise! The cost of joining the YHA is about 16 GBP. Good Luck! "Patm" wrote in message ... Hi All We wish to travel from Perth in late March 2006 after visiting with friends to Sydney. Takes 3 days to do but you get to take in the views. I endorse that view. Worth doing the off-train trips (extra cost) as well. Make sure you book Gold Kangaroo class. This has sleeper cabins and includes all meals. It is a big step up from Red Kangaroo, which basically has a hamburger bar, and you sit in airline seats unless you pay extra. I did the trip 2 years ago in Gold Kangaroo. The first night (heading out from Sydney) was a bit rough, but the railway is much smoother after that. They have improved the line since then. -- Martin Hunt Ngaio Wellington New Zealand Our Environment, our future - www.environmentvote.org.nz |
