Plane carrying 3 crashes in Honomolino

At least two of them were transported to Kona Community
Hospital in critical condition for treatment of burns,
according to rescue officials.

The passengers were found at the crash site but the pilot
had left in search of help, officials said. She was found
late Sunday night by personnel from the Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard helicopter dispatched from Honolulu located
the crash site about 30 miles south of Kailua-Kona
shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday.

Fire officials at a temporary search headquarters near
Milolii confirmed the crashed plane was a single-engine
Piper Warrior owned by Island Hoppers, a tour plane
company with offices at Hilo and Kona airports. Two
passengers and a pilot were aboard the plane at the time
of the crash.

The plane left Kona International Airport at 4:15 p.m.
and was scheduled to fly to Hawaii Volcanoes National
Park and back but it ran into trouble, Fire Capt. Charles
Cope said.

The pilot was not familiar with the South Kona terrain,
he added.
