Neither. You pay in Rupiah. ATM machines abound. Leave your cash at
home and just pick up Rupiah using an ATM machine.

ViergeRupiah is the local currency. There are money changers who will change any currency readily, but their rates are not brilliant - and they have been known to (actually are notorious for) scam the rate with dodgy calculators etc. Take a cirrus or maestro or similarly affiliated card. ATM's are everywhere - from the arrivals area of Denpassar airport on.

If you have to use a local money changer be very careful and make sure
you
always make the final counting yourself. If you observe the slightest
attempt
to trick you just walk away.

In addition the money changers have had a bad reputation of making the
ATM
machines unavailble (sabotage) in order not to ruin their business.

Spent last summer on Bali. Euros are perfectly fine - take cash! All the
stories about money changers seem to be quite exaggerated. Not once did I
experience someone trying to pull one off. Maybe Kuta is a bit difficult, don't
know, haven't changed there with a money changer as there, they add a fee on
their published quotes quite often, so I was annoyed. Went to a bank and that
was alright . My experience: withdrawing money from let's say EC-cards et al is
really expensive. VISA or other credit cards are okay for paying goods and give
you favourable ex-rates. Regarding fake calculators: Shouldn't be too difficult
to figure out w/o calculators how much 100x or 200x is, innit? Enjoy - Bali is
quite beautiful.
