Can anybody suggest the best place to stay in the Columbia River Gorge
for a few nights to use as a base to see the area ?

There's a lot of lodging in Gresham and it's fairly close to the
Historic Columbia River Gorge Highway. If you want to get away from
the big city, the suggestion of Hood River is good.

Well, the traditional place is the Columbia Gorge Hotel in Hood River.
Across the river in Stevenson, Washington is the Skamania Lodge. Both of
these are pricey. Next door to the Columbia Gorge Hotel is the Vagabond Inn,
which looks like an old motel, but in the back they have modern rooms with
balconies overlooking the river. It was several years ago we were there, but
we found it quite nice. There's also a hotel in "downtown" Hood River.

Nice area to explore, especially the Oregon side, which has a unique
ecosystem.

Many thanks to everybody who has taken the time to reply to my
message. What a wonderful place the internet can be when looking for
information from people who know.
