Default Travel from N. Virginia to South Carolina

I live in Northern Viginia. My parents are coming from abroad to here
to visit us in late June. I also have three and seven years old boy (2
boys).
We are planning to go north and south carolina for about a week from
here as a family vacation as I heard that they are beautiful.
Since we've been to Richmond and Williamsburg area before, we will
probably go directly North and South Carolina unless there are other
special places to visit inbetween here to there.
Can you suggest the ideal itenary for our family of six (grandparent,
our coupld and my kids)? Since I have elderly parents and young kids, I
can't visit too many places nor too many hours in the road.

Thank you in advance for your help!!!

You should probably decide first whether you favor beaches or mountains.

If you favor beaches, you could visit NC's Outer Banks, then continue
south to Charleston, then return home.

Otherwise, you could head down the Blue Ridge Parkway to Asheville and the
Smoky Mountains.
