Any one have any recommendations for cheap flights from new york to
anywhere in Canada , heck even newfoundland ?

Don't forget Cathay Pacific which flies to Vancouver (on either a B747
or A340) from New York JFK (and also among if not the cheapest nonstop
JFK-YVR flights)

The cheapest I can find is $161 from LGA to Toronto on American.

On the other hand, there's a daily train from Penn Station to
Montreal, with a round trip fare of $115. It has pleasant views of
the Hudson valley and Lake Champlain.

Flying to Newfoundland from the US isn't cheap. Why would you think it is?

Its pretty expensive from Canada. (Very few flights) It would probably be
cheaper in the long run to get to Nova Scotia via ferry from eastern
seaboard and then bus and ferry to Nfld.

Try WestJet, Jetsgo and Canjet from LGA or EWR to YYZ, YUL or YHX.
