Default Traveling to Europe (again)

We will be taking another trip to Europe in May. I would love to get
some "tips" on how to make the trip more enjoyable. In the past, when
I have asked for help, I received more stupid answers than helpful. I
don't mind some whimsical banter as long as some helpful things come
with it.

If I truly upset too many people with my posts, please tell me. Even
better, does anyone know of other sites where I can receive help?

There are plenty of tourism sites on the internet, sometimes with
interactive maps of city centers with info about sites of interest in
the area. Of course, you need to decide which cities you're going to be
in long enough to make it worth taking notes.

Well, one tip is to not worry about the details of your trip so far in
advance. Hundreds of millions of people live in Europe, millions of
others visit each year, and for most of them, most things go fine most
of the time. Just do what you want to do, and don't fret. It is not
culturally SO different from the U.S. that you are going to make the
kind of gaffe that will have people talking about you for years to
come, or get you thrown in jail.

It's very difficult to give a more detailed response to such a general
question. I mean, your trip will probably be more enjoyable if you
avoid handling wasps' nests, but I imagine that's not the kind of
advice you want.

Kathy,

It would be helpful if you told us how you want to travel or what part of
Europe you want to go to. I am travelling to Europe on a touring holiday in
May. We fly direct to Lyon and then take the train in a big circle to places
we like in France, Italy and Switzerland and return home from Geneva. I can
recommend rail travel in Europe; it is so relaxing and civilised. But as we
live in Scotland, we usually fly to and from the continent to save time and
money.

So, if you do want to do some travel by rail, go to The Man in Seat 61's web
site at http://www.seat61.com/. It is the oracle as far as rail travel is
concerned. Using his advice, we have booked all our long distance train
journeys online. Most of the tickets obtained 90 days in advance were
fantastic bargains!

Tips:
1. If you want fantastic food at reasonable prices, go to Italy.
2. If you have never been to Venice, it is a "must" before you die! And, if
you want to get away from all the tourists, walk away from the tourist traps
and find the real Venice.
3. Learn a bit about the language of the country(ies) you are going to. BBC
have several good online interactive courses.
4. If you want to go where nearly everyone speaks English, go to The
Netherlands or eastern Belgium.

Give us a specific question, and as Surreyman says, we're happy to help.
It's the daft ones where we pull your leg a bit. (ok, quite a lot
actually).

It is funny, we could understand the English people spoke in countries
like Germany, much better than the English spoken by the people in
London and Ireland.
