Default How long for Naples ?

I want to go to Naples and Pompeii.

What else is there to do/see in that area.

How long should I go for - is a long (or short) weekend enough ?
Or will I need a full week ?

A nice hotel in the area would be good - doesn't have to be in the City -
maybe a nearby beach with easy day trips to Naples and Pompeii.

Any thoughts from those who have been to that area would be appreciated.

I dont really want to be driving a lot.

Your best bet is Sorrento. It has good fast transport connections. There are
fast and regular Hydrofoils to Naples and lots of other places where you can
go for the day out: Amalfi, Capri and Positano et al. There is also the
fairly regular commuter line, the Circumvesuviana, which will drop you off
almost at the front door to Pompei. It only takes about half an hour or so
to get to Naples.

Sorrento is quite nice and fairly civilized but, once you move along the
peninsular towards Naples, past Vico Equense, it is like a bad day in
Beirut. The towns of Torre del Greco, Torre Anunziata and Castellammare di
Stabia are places to view only in passing. Preferably from the train. If you
follow the goings on with the turf war between the rival Camorra Families,
that is where it is all going on.

There are lots of nice places to swim or lounge about in the sun and several
good places to eat. Admittedly, it is a bit touristy but not overly. You can
get a local bus upto Massa Lubrense or a bit further to Sant Agata sui due
Golfi where the is a posh restaurant, Don Alfonso's . It is in the top ten
in Italy but I tried it and thought it was a bit over the top. It was nice
but certainly not worth the high price.

You can rent an apartment easily enough which is better, in my opinion, than
being tied to a hotel. There are lots of sites in Google.

Try this for transport:

Naples is a world of it's own. A full week would not be enough to really
appreciate Naples. Pompeii is at least a day by itself, although, last
summer it seems to have suffered from winter rains or something. Many
buildings and streets were closed for renovations. There is the Royal
Palace, National Archeological Museum (be sure to visit the "Secret
Cabinet"), the underground (not subway). An morning spent in the Spanish
Quarter is special A day trip to Capri is fun. You should get a good tour
book just on Naples. And do be sure to have some of their "cold cappuccino".

I dont really want to be driving a lot.

No, no, no, no! Not in Naples. You don't even want to take a taxi, if you
can help it. The traffic in Naples is world famous and the taxi drivers are
just as famous for their overcharges.

the Excelsior is well place on the front near the castle and fish
restaurant area. My holiday snaps show it he-

You will want a day to see Pompeii, a day to climb to the top of
Vesuvius front the car park (most of the way up) and the two
evenings to try the restaurants, as a minimum. BTW driving in
Napoli is a hoot. You can take a train to Pompeii if you want to,
there's a station right outside.
