Impressive response, Peter. And us Americans hold you Aussies in high regard
for helping defend freedom around the world. Many of these third world
countries complain about the USA, but where do you think they run to first
when they get in trouble?

Dave from USA, and proud of it.

Actually, it's up to anybody who deals with a visitor.
Naturally.
Why tell me, tell it to Senior Ignoramus. It is he who claims to be
speaking for all Malaysian. With 'WE' refers to people in general
including himself.
Especially in Malaysia, the term we is always questionable.

Why is that? I suppose because you figure Malaysia is more diverse
than most countries?

It is diverse but I put more emphasis on real ethinic divisions.

And would that prevent Malaysians from
recognizing disrespect for their country and people?

No, but recognizing disrespect can be perceived very different among
different people.
For example if a so-called Western couple (it was initially about
that)
were to hold hand in public or wearing a bikini, this would surely
be perceived as disrespectful by the people of Kelantan.
As I have heard, the wearing of shorts for man is not very respectful
amongst Muslim. The Chinese have not much a problem with this.

Which is why a visitor might want to understand that different
behavior is considered acceptable in KL or Ipoh than in KB.

[snip]
But I think what you really mean is that many people who find
that visitors disrespect the local customs will do their best to get
as much money out of them as possible, by way of recompense (I even
thought of the word "reparations").

Yup and yup, exactement ...

That causes disrespect on the part of the visitors and those making
money off them alike, doesn't it?

Sure, it's polite for hosts to try their best to be hospitable, but
it's up to guests to understand that they are there are the pleasure
of the local population, and ought to respect their hosts.

You bring the right word understanding. Some Westerners, (whatever
that may be) sometimes misunderstand that some of there behaviour can
been perceived as insulting and disrespectful.

Right. And some don't even try to find out.

Michael,

I'm sure you're a decent fellow, but you are naive.

And you are - well, I'm not sure what adjective to use.

I have been around the
world,

As have I.

and there is no question America is the greatest country on Earth.

In every way? Nope.

Why do you think everyone wants to come here?

Not everyone wants to immigrate to the U.S. Do you see large numbers
of people from all the advanced economies with universal medical
coverage beating down our doors?

And, frankly, I don't care
what people from other countries think about our defense from terrorism.

The attack on Iraq was not a "defense from terrorism," nor is the
abuse of Iraqi prisoners or the indefinite detention of people at the
U.S. base in Guantanamo.

As
our great president

[nauseating]

said, we don't need a permission slip to defend
ourselves.

Only because the U.S. is powerful enough to act as a bully. But the
problem with being a bully is that it may be effective against weaker
conventional forces but is a poor defense against terrorists and
guerrillas. Did Bush really need to inflame lots of Iraqis who had not
been acting against American targets?

Europe is slowly awakening to the danger of radical muslims.

Saddam wasn't a "radical Muslim," but the new Iraqi resistance/terror
movements are, in some cases.

Are you the embodiment of the Accidental Tourist, taking your myopic,
simplistic, falsifying view of the
world-from-the-viewpoint-of-your-version-of-the-U.S. with you
everywhere, no matter what?

And you call _me_ "naive." Pathetic.

Sorry, I thought I was dealing with someone who had a grip on reality. Hope
they let you out once in a while...

You'll find that what you call a "grip on reality" exists only in
right-wing states of the U.S. and hardly anywhere else. So 95% of the
world must be "insane," right? It couldn't be that perhaps _you_ lack
a grip on reality?
