Default Campervan travelling

Hi,

We are considering the hire of a 2-berth campervan to travel from Cairns to
Brisbane near the end of August as a means of visiting many of the national
parks near the coast. The best quotation so far is with GetAbout OZ. Can
anyone share experiences/pitfalls with this type of travel, as an
alternative to bus passes, car rental, dining out, and hostel accommodation?
We have a little over two weeks to make the journey.

Thanks,
Greg

Before our first trip to Oz, we had never done this (travelling in a
campervan). We *LOVED* it and still do. Sofar we made 4 trips (7, 10, 5
and 5 weeks), the latter two with a 4WD campervan. We love the freedom
it gives, nice campsites, nice people, etc.. In many cases it is not the
cheapest option, but also by no means the most expensive one, and, in
our opinion, well worth the money.

Have a great one and please feel free to ask any questions.

You should find the campervan a great way of doing the trip. It will allow
you the freedom to pace your trip to suit yourselves. We did a 10 day trip
in NZ (see
http://www.reservationheaven.com/wik...20Descriptions)

A 2 berth may not have all of the facilities you need if you are looking at
camping out', but this I suppose is also budget driven. As long as you have
enough food and water you can camp out for a few days in the National Parks
easily. Caravan parks can add to costs, but nice to get in for a hot shower
etc.

It will work out relatively cheaply as well, as you can self cater (v
bussing and eating take-away food etc.) or even car hire (either tent,
onsite cabin or motel rooms).

2 weeks is a good time frame, assuming that does not include time spent in
Cairns.

You may also dare to be different and take the inland route - inland from
Mackay to Emerald, through to Carnarvon Gorge Nat Park then swing east
through Toowoomba to Brisbane. Give you a different perspective on
Queensland..

Queensland at that time of the year is superb.
You sem to have done
some homework on what time to see the tropical parts of Australia, as
the humidity can be oppressive in "summer".
National Parks are a great
way to see Australia. In my home State of South Australia, you can buy a
4 week National Parks pass, entitling you to free entry and up to 5
night's free camping in any National park in the State. Victoria hasn't
anything like that for their parks, but it may be an idea to check to
see if the Queensland National Parks Dep't has anything similar . . .
it may save you a bit!
Don't forget to drop in on caravan parks every
time your washing gets too much, and use their washing machines, etc.
while you are talking to others campers who can tell you good spots to
visit on your way.
Good luck on your travels,
Bob
