How long can you drive continuously?

My car has always worked okay but perhaps I should "rest" it every hour or so. I sometimes drive from SF to LA which takes six hours. I have a bad back and bad knees but I normally drive 3-4 hours without stopping. Sometimes longer. My wife and I usually split the driving now but the furthest I ever drove by myself in one day was about 950 miles. |

How long can you drive continuously?

I drove to Bayonne, NJ once in the middle of the night and at 90-100MPH, the bumper to bumper tractor/trailers were blowing by like I was sitting still and I was the only car on the road. That was back in '86, haven't been back there since. I remember many years that a friend was driving and we were going from DC to CT late at night. We got over the GW bridge and he was doing 80-85 on the Cross Bronx just after the bridge. There were 3 trucks in front of us, one on each side and 3 in back. And the truck in back of us kept honking his horn and flashing his lights. We couldn't imagine what he thought we could do. |

How long can you drive continuously?
Theres a story in the current issue of Wired about breaking the
stealth "Cannonball record" which stood at 32 hours for a cross-country drive averaging the high 80s-mph. Supposedly roads are better patrolled than the 1970s and this has been hard to do. But the new contenders make use of computer maps to avoid speed traps, find quick gas stations, etc. You have to read the interesting article to find how it turned out. |

I can't imagine averaging that high going coast to coast. I recently heard just the end of a story about someone trying to drive cross country very fast. I heard some state trooper talking about 140 mph. |
