I am changing my travel ways this time round, instead of just backpacking

Might I suggest you do not mention this to the immigration officials
at the border. IT would fall under working without a permit and could
mean you will be volunteering at the local prison for a few years.

Nonsense, especially the way he is doing it by going through local
officials or under the auspices of non-governmental or religious organizations
with local programs.

I volunteered on a kibbutz in Israel for 6 months when I was
backpacking around Europe in the 70s. It was warm, and we actually
got a tiny allowance as well as soap, shampoo and chocolate.

I don't know whether they still have volunteers or whether they accept
them for only 2 weeks, though.
