The subway is a flat $2.25 (discounted to about $1.96 if you put at least
$8 on a card each time) which includes a free transfer to/from a bus line
if necessary. Taxis are $2.50 to start, 40 cents for each 1/5 mile and 40
cents for each 60 seconds at less than 12 MPH, plus 50 cents per ride from
8 PM to 6 AM and $1 per ride Mon-Fri from 4 PM to 8 PM.

You need to decide what's best for you for each trip.

Bridgewater, NJ

Can we use the same ticket for multi-person in the same party?
Many European cities allow this.

No. *15 minutes on NJ Transit to Penn Station if they want to go uptown
unless they can't afford the $7 off peak round trip. *If they are going to
make at least five round trips in a calendar week, they could buy a weekly
ticket for roughly the same amount of money, and then they could go back
and forth as much as they want for a flat price.

Dear Michael, is there any weekly NYC MTA subway ticket, or tourist package
type stuff?

As has been stated somewhere in this thread, there are both daily and
weekly "Unlimited" cards (which can be used by only one person at a
time) (also monthly ones).

Newark Penn is 20 minutes on PATH from World Trade and 15 minutes on a
good day from Penn Station on NJ Transit. *NJT is more expensive ($4 one
way and $7.00 round trip-non-rush hours only). *You can get to 33rd St.
on PATH from Newark, but you have to change trains at Journal Square,
and it's a slow ride, about 50 minutes.

JSQ to 33 is 20 minutes tops. Late-nights and weekends you detour
through Hoboken, which adds 10-15 min.

I made a trip from Newark to 33rd while the WTC station was closed,
direct with no transfer. *It took 50 minutes.

So that means they would have to burn two hours a day getting to/from
the hotel.

Thats no bargain.

So who is suggesting they stay in Newark

There are many fancy hotels in "the new downtown" Jersey City, one
stop, 5 minutes, from WTC.

That is the time for the ride, but the trip has to be considered
"door-to-door".

You make it sound like its 5 minutes from the hotel (which could cost
just as much as one in the city) to WTC.

I guess you've never walked out the main entrance of the Hyatt and
crossed the street to the Exchange Place PATH entrance.

Thats right. I never have.

It it still takes longer than 5 minutes from the Hyatt to WTC. ;-)

Only if you include the time you wait on the platform for the train to
come.

We do not mind doing some walking, which most Americans (particularly us
from California), do not have much of.

Then NYC is perfect for you!

(The point here was that Slim doesn't know what he's talking about.)

And no, you don't need to buy a SmartCard. The machines still sell non-

For a visitor it may be easier to pay a la carte one-way fares rather
than try and figure out multi-ride discounts which may not even be a
very big saving. *A lot depends on their plans.

If they're here for five days, then they need 10 one-way fares each.
Why should each spend the extra $4.50 on a la carte fares -- for
which, moreover, they'd have to wait in line at a machine for every
time?

A single 20-ride card takes care of all their commuting needs from a
fine hotel in "new downtown" Jersey City to Downtown Manhattan or
Village/Midtown.

Things to know:
Pay Per Ride:

* *For example, a $20 purchase gives you $23 on your card. * *Bus and
subway rides deduct $2.25 for each passenger, one swipe at a
* *time.
* *The pay per ride allows up to four people at the same time to ride.
Transfers to and from buses require only one swipe for the party.
* *It's also good on the PATH ($1.75 per person), but no transfers are
* *given to NYC buses or subway, if you start on PATH from NJ.

Unlimited rides (one, seven, and thirty days, but I guess the one day or
week would be OK for you):

* *The single day and week long unlimited may only be used by one
* *person at a time, so each in your party must have their own card.. *They
are NOT good on PATH.
* *The time starts when you first use the card.
* *Daily cards are good until 3:00am the next day and weekly cards are
* *good until midnight seven days later.

To decide which to buy, figure out how many rides you expect to take. *I
suppose if you plan many rides, the $27 seven day might be good, even if
you're here for a few days. *One day cards cost $8.25, so even three days
at five rides a day, you're ahead. *But remember no PATH rides with these
and each of you needs your own card.

Thank you Joseph,
OK. Two of us will be in NYC on Oct 26 to 31 (to avoid Halloween and NYC
Marathon).
We probably do average 2 return trip each person (4 trip total) per day.
So, one signle regular MetroCard is probably good for us party of two?
How much should we get $45? Can we get our money back if we do not use up
all $45?
The MetroCard vanding machines available at all MTA stations?
The MetroCard web site does not tell me what qualify for reduced fare?-

No refund on unused MetroCard (but they're good forever -- if the card
itself expires (date printed on the back), the next time you put it in
the fare machine it replaces it with a new one with the same amount on
it.

The $27 one-week pass for each is definitely the best deal for you.

Yes. Up to four free transfers are stored on the card at a time. Thus
you swipe it twice (i.e., first person hands it back to second person)
when the two of you get on the subway, and dip it once when you change
to the bus.

Or, you dip it twice when you get on the bus and dip/swipe it once
when you change to the bus/subway.

But PLEASE don't stay in Noo Joisey. It can take you an hour or more late
night to get back to your hotel.

Slim, I kind of agree with you. So far, unable to find any significant
attactively priced NJ Hotels on Hudson near PATH stations. May be somebody
can enlight me a little here. Thank you.

Slim doesn't know what he's talking about. He has the prejudice of the
ignorant.

If you don't like the Hyatt and the other chains in "new downtown"
Jersey City, there's not much we can do for you!

We like this short term apartment in Matthattan for a week deal?
Where can we find it and how to learn more? We don't mind tidy up before
we leave.

I've never done it myself, being that I live in NYC, but many of my
friends in Europe like to do it that way when they visit. *Have you
considered putting an ad on Craigslist? *Or looking for one? *Maybe check
out Village Voice for "short-term rentals" (or something to that effect).

I'm guessing if you go this route, now is the time to do it.

Yes, we listed on Craigslist. Got several short term vacation rentals
responses. Particularly a few quite low prices studio in East Harlem. Since
we hard know anything about NYC, can you please tell us how to define safe
and reasonably pleasant neighborhood? Say how far north on East side and how
far north on West side we should look? Should we not look above 120th
Street?

We obviously unable to tell by Google Street View. Thank you.

East Harlem used to begin at 96th St. (where the commuter train under
Park Avenue emerges as an elevated railroad), but gentrification has
been pushing northward and eastward, and throughout Harlem, for about
a decade now. You'd probably have to go street by street for an idea.

There isn't any East Harlem north of 120th St. -- the Harlem River
curves westward (and much of that area is public housing).

Dear Michael, is there any weekly NYC MTA subway ticket, or tourist
package type stuff?

Here, again is the MTA Metrocard page about the unlimited cards:

http://www.mta.info/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm#unlimited

Each member of your party must have their own card. The daily ($8.25)
is good until 3:00am the following day. The weekly ($27) is good until
midnight seven days after first use.

If you expect to ride more than five trips a day for three days, you'll
be ahead with the weekly card.
