type stuff?

As has been stated somewhere in this thread, there are both daily and
weekly "Unlimited" cards (which can be used by only one person at a
time) (also monthly ones).

There are many fancy hotels in "the new downtown" Jersey City, one
stop, 5 minutes, from WTC.

That is the time for the ride, but the trip has to be considered
"door-to-door".

You make it sound like its 5 minutes from the hotel (which could cost
just as much as one in the city) to WTC.

I guess you've never walked out the main entrance of the Hyatt and
crossed the street to the Exchange Place PATH entrance.

It it still takes longer than 5 minutes from the Hyatt to WTC. ;-)

Only if you include the time you wait on the platform for the train to

We do not mind doing some walking, which most Americans (particularly us
from California), do not have much of.

OK. Two of us will be in NYC on Oct 26 to 31 (to avoid Halloween and NYC
Marathon).
We probably do average 2 return trip each person (4 trip total) per day.
So, one signle regular MetroCard is probably good for us party of two?
How much should we get $45? Can we get our money back if we do not use up
all $45?
The MetroCard vanding machines available at all MTA stations?
The MetroCard web site does not tell me what qualify for reduced fare?-

No refund on unused MetroCard (but they're good forever -- if the card
itself expires (date printed on the back), the next time you put it in
the fare machine it replaces it with a new one with the same amount on
it.

The $27 one-week pass for each is definitely the best deal for you.

Yes. Up to four free transfers are stored on the card at a time. Thus
you swipe it twice (i.e., first person hands it back to second person)
when the two of you get on the subway, and dip it once when you change
to the bus.

Or, you dip it twice when you get on the bus and dip/swipe it once
when you change to the bus/subway.

Yes, we listed on Craigslist. Got several short term vacation rentals
responses. Particularly a few quite low prices studio in East Harlem. Since
we hard know anything about NYC, can you please tell us how to define safe
and reasonably pleasant neighborhood? Say how far north on East side and how
far north on West side we should look? Should we not look above 120th
Street?

East Harlem used to begin at 96th St. (where the commuter train under
Park Avenue emerges as an elevated railroad), but gentrification has
been pushing northward and eastward, and throughout Harlem, for about
a decade now. You'd probably have to go street by street for an idea.

There isn't any East Harlem north of 120th St. -- the Harlem River
curves westward (and much of that area is public housing).

Each member of your party must have their own card. The daily ($8.25)
is good until 3:00am the following day. The weekly ($27) is good until
midnight seven days after first use.

If you expect to ride more than five trips a day for three days, you'll
be ahead with the weekly card.
