A woman friend of mine grew up there. When she visited Istanbul
for the first time she said it was an immense relief to feel safe
at night for a change, unlike what she'd experienced in Indian
cities. (She's Indian, this isn't a Westerner's perspective).

So it seems, whether or not it actually is safe, it doesn't feel
that way.

Her actual problem with Bangalore was with chaos and filth rather
than violence - she considered moving back there but decided she
couldn't take it again.
